About Buntzen Lake Recreation Area

Buntzen Lake Recreation Area is located in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, approximately 30 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area centers around Buntzen Lake, a reservoir formed by damming Indian Arm, which sits in a deep coastal rainforest valley surrounded by steep mountainous terrain. The lake covers about 112 hectares and is a key water supply reservoir managed by BC Hydro. The surrounding forest is dominated by western hemlock, Douglas fir, and western red cedar, featuring rich understory vegetation and habitat for diverse wildlife including black bears, bald eagles, and various amphibians.

Historically, the site was developed to supply hydroelectric power to Vancouver, with the dam completed in the early 20th century; later, the area was designated and developed for public recreation. Today, Buntzen Lake offers comprehensive outdoor activities such as hiking, trail running, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, and paddling. The trail network totals over 20 kilometers with well-maintained paths ranging from easy lakeside strolls to challenging alpine ascents. Notable trails include the Buntzen Lake Trail encircling the water and the challenging Diez Vistas trail that offers panoramic views of Indian Arm, the lake, and distant urban areas.

Visitors are drawn to the combination of natural beauty and accessibility, with picnic sites, a day-use area, swimming beach, and boat launches. The lake is a serene place in summer months and the forests offer quiet, shaded exploration opportunities year round. The area’s proximity to Vancouver makes it a favored retreat for locals and tourists seeking nature, fresh air, and physical activity without extensive travel.

Buntzen Lake Recreation Area is managed to balance recreation with environmental protection and public safety, providing a safe and welcoming outdoor experience close to a major metropolitan center.
